I went to my kid's Spring Choral concert last night at Kennard-Dale High School. I have two of my children in Middle School but every year, the Middle School and High School chorus combine for a spectacular display of voices.
One of the songs the High School chorus sung was "What Was I Made For?" originally performed by Billie Eilish for the Barbie Movie. It is a truly beautiful song and the chorus performed it beautifully.
What was I made for? How many of us ask that same question? What is my purpose on this Earth? Why am I here?
These are fantastic questions to ask, but they are so limiting. They focus on a singular topic - "me".
Just like the Parable of the Moon, let's shift focus and perspective. Instead of asking What and Why questions, simply change the questions to Who and How and even Where.
- Who am I here to serve?
- How can I make this world better?
- Where can I make a difference?
When you change perspective, you remove the limitations. You shift focus away from you toward the greater community. You start to see yourself as part of something bigger. You see your purpose and ultimately you end up answering the question - What Was I Made For?
