The Parable of the Broken Plate

Go to the dollar store or your local thrift shop and purchase a china plate. Bring it home and throw it on the floor. Go ahead. No one is watching.

Is the plate broken?

Depending on the force, it likely is. At best – it is chipped. And if not, that is some pretty fine china!

Now, pick the pieces up and apologize to the plate. Again, no one is watching. You are safe. You won’t look silly?

Now is that plate any less broken, chipped or damaged?

Unless you are a miracle worker, the answer is no. We all have good intentions when we say sorry but none of us realize just how damaging our words and actions are when the breaking happens. Even the best amount of glue can only repair a break – nothing can ever remove it so lets treat the people around us like china and prevent breaking them with our words.
